Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory super food said to aid in treating a host of ailments, including: arthritis, heartburn, digestive issues like diarrhea, IBS and colitis; jaundice, liver problems, gallbladder disorders, headaches, bronchitis, colds, lung infections, fibromyalgia, shingles, fever, menstrual cramps, cancer, depression, Alzheimer’s disease, water retention, worms, and kidney problems.  High in anti-oxidants when taken internally, it can also be applied topically for pain, ringworm, bruising, leech bites, infections, inflammatory skin conditions, and canker sores.

For a few weeks out of the year, I can find it fresh in root form at a local farmer’s market, lookin’ all cute like a tiny carrot/ginger love child.  It can be  sliced or grated and sautéed or simmered and is an excellent addition to soups and stir-fry.  I like to eat it raw in salads.  It is slightly peppery when raw, and quite spicy and pungent when dried.  Powdered turmeric is used in cuisine throughout the far East and middle East and can be found in curries, rice dishes, mustard, vegetable and meat dishes, and teas.

Numi Organic Tea has several Turmeric tea varieties which are warm, spicy, and comforting.  My favorite is Amber Sun, which has rooibos, cinnamon, and vanilla.  It has a chai quality, especially is a little honey is added.  Numi is a fabulous company with great products and fair trade, fair labor, and direct sourcing practices.  Their teas are also non-GMO and organic.

My favorite way to reap the benefits of turmeric is in the Tropical Turmeric Cleanser green smoothie, courtesy of the lovely ladies at Simple Green Smoothies.  It is creamy, satisfying and delicious, but then all of their smoothie recipes are really good.

Tropical Turmeric Cleanser Green Smoothie

Serves 2

Ingredients:

2 cups kale
2 cups coconut milk
2 cups pineapple
1 cup mango
Juice of ½ lemon
1 Tablespoon fresh ginger
¼ to 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric, to taste

Directions

1. Blend kale and coconut milk until smooth.

2. Add remaining ingredients, and blend until smooth. Enjoy!

*Use at least one frozen fruit to make smoothie cold.
